Editorial: An Open Letter to Cirque de Soleil

Thumbnail image for Editorial: An Open Letter to Cirque de Soleil

Dear Cirque de Soleil, First, I need to tell you of my absolute admiration for the incredible accomplishments of Cirque de Soleil – artistic and creative, ingenious and inventive, athletic and graceful, masterful and musical – just a true joy to watch and experience the “grandest circus” of them all. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing 3 Cirque de Soleil shows in my life, the first was Saltimbanco in Seattle about 12 years ago, the second was Zumanity in Las Vegas 6 years ago, and last weekend I saw Totem in San Francisco – all of them beautifully executed with [...]

Some Rules Are Meant To Be Broken…

Thumbnail image for Some Rules Are Meant To Be Broken…

[Updated 11/20/2011] My favorite game when I was 8 years old was Monopoly. I loved the idea of owning property, building a kingdom, the risks and rewards – and I loved the rules. Taking turns to move around the board, getting paid if someone landed on your property, 3 turns to get out of jail without doubles and without a Get Out of Jail card…lots of options, lots of possibilities. When you were a child, you naturally loved to play games. You learned the accepted pattern…and sometimes, you figured out what you could do to change the pattern and make it more interesting. Still [...]

Getting Heard in a Brave New Digital World

Thumbnail image for Getting Heard in a Brave New Digital World

There’s an awful lot of noise out there in the world wide web. New concepts. New words. Stuff that most of us had barely even heard of 10 years ago. Websites. Blogs. Search Optimization. Search. SEO/SEM. Online Advertising. Social Media. Social networking. Digital Resumes. Mobile Applications. iPads, iPhones… Tweeting used to be done by birds. Rockstars were musicians, not social media wannabe  ”gurus”. And Facebook was just a simple way for  students to connect – not a gargantuan mega-database of nearly 1  of every 7 people on the planet.

Editorial: The New Rules of Survival on the Social Internet

Survival On The Social Internet

A Massachusetts teacher, June Talvitie-Siple, gets fired from her job because of disparaging comments she wrote about the school community on Facebook. Domino’s Pizza executives are caught blind-sided because they didn’t realize that employees have created and posted a YouTube video that shows them messing with customer food orders. The video gets millions of views, the employees are arrested and the ensuing scandal is graphic, public and online. A small southern California town, the City of Bell, gains notoriety when its city administrators and city councilors sky-high self-appointed salaries are exposed across the internet for the world to see. What’s [...]

Editorial: A Reply to Paige Craig “I Have Doubts Once I Think Of Women Founders Having Kids And Being Distracted From Work”

Paige Craig

This post is a personal one – it’s an open reply to a post by Paige Craig, co-founder and CEO of BetterWorks, and an angel investor. Paige wrote a post on his doubts about investing in a woman entrepreneur after he found out she was pregnant, but after he’d already made the commitment to invest in her company. This is my direct response to him (after I realized my comment post was going to be really long!): A personal note to Paige Craig: For having the courage to be honest about your opinions, Paige – you’re to be congratulated – [...]

5 Famous Traits your Social Media Hire should Possess

Thumbnail image for 5 Famous Traits your Social Media Hire should Possess

Can just anyone direct and implement a successful social media initiative? Do you remember playing sports in school and you were the team captain having to choose players from the lot of those who showed up. The other team picked first and it came down to the last player that you were stuck with? “I guess he/she’ll do.” Now, imagine if that game were a major championship with it all riding on the line. The success of your social media endeavors should never come down to an I guess he or she’ll do. When your organization ventures into the world [...]

Those Whippersnappers are Your Customers

Social Media

We would all love a flood of new customers. Not many of us would deny that statement. However, many of the challenges of our day-to-day business battles revolve around keeping the customers we have, making them happy, getting them to buy more and prodding them to tell a friend or relative about our products or services. It’s not every day we get a chance to actually stay “top of mind” with our customers and truly have a conversation with them. Even top sales personnel sometimes don’t interact with a customer for weeks and even months.

Realtors and Social Media: An Argument for Engagement

Many businesses are struggling to grapple with the concept of how social media can work for them in their business, not the least of which is the world of realtors and real estate. Many realtors still think of social media as that intangible, “virtual” place – the “world wide web”, an online place of bits and bytes where most interaction is with a computer or laptop or keyboard. It feels entirely at odds with the familiar, physical world of real estate, of homes and land, property and listings. But real estate isn’t just about the physical space that a person [...]

Chasing a High Follower Count Will Never Make You Happy

Thumbnail image for Chasing a High Follower Count Will Never Make You Happy

I was in a meeting the other day with another social media professional and we were looking for case studies to feature in a panel discussion. My colleague brought up one specific brand again and again. She kept exclaiming over their high follower numbers. I found myself irritated with the emphasis. It got to the point where I couldn’t hide it anymore and my tone was sharp and she noticed. “I’m just not that impressed with numbers”, I said. Yeah, I don’t think that we’re going to be catching a beer together anytime soon. In a world where anyone can [...]
