Editorial: An Open Letter to Cirque de Soleil

Thumbnail image for Editorial: An Open Letter to Cirque de Soleil

Dear Cirque de Soleil, First, I need to tell you of my absolute admiration for the incredible accomplishments of Cirque de Soleil – artistic and creative, ingenious and inventive, athletic and graceful, masterful and musical – just a true joy to watch and experience the “grandest circus” of them all. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing 3 Cirque de Soleil shows in my life, the first was Saltimbanco in Seattle about 12 years ago, the second was Zumanity in Las Vegas 6 years ago, and last weekend I saw Totem in San Francisco – all of them beautifully executed with [...]

Some Rules Are Meant To Be Broken…

Thumbnail image for Some Rules Are Meant To Be Broken…

[Updated 11/20/2011] My favorite game when I was 8 years old was Monopoly. I loved the idea of owning property, building a kingdom, the risks and rewards – and I loved the rules. Taking turns to move around the board, getting paid if someone landed on your property, 3 turns to get out of jail without doubles and without a Get Out of Jail card…lots of options, lots of possibilities. When you were a child, you naturally loved to play games. You learned the accepted pattern…and sometimes, you figured out what you could do to change the pattern and make it more interesting. Still [...]

Facebook Announces Partnership with Web Of Trust To Enhance Security

Thumbnail image for Facebook Announces Partnership with Web Of Trust To Enhance Security

Facebook has just announced a partnership today with Web of Trust, a free tool that leverages crowd-sourcing to determine the “trust” factor of websites. WOT has built a database of “safe” websites based on the ratings of millions of users who have rated millions of websites based on their experiences. To rate a website, you need to have a WOT account (free) and download an add-on for the browser you use.  The WOT add-on tells you which sites you can trust when using Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo!, Bing, Wikipedia and other popular sites. The free add-on works with Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, [...]

Editorial: The New Rules of Survival on the Social Internet

Survival On The Social Internet

A Massachusetts teacher, June Talvitie-Siple, gets fired from her job because of disparaging comments she wrote about the school community on Facebook. Domino’s Pizza executives are caught blind-sided because they didn’t realize that employees have created and posted a YouTube video that shows them messing with customer food orders. The video gets millions of views, the employees are arrested and the ensuing scandal is graphic, public and online. A small southern California town, the City of Bell, gains notoriety when its city administrators and city councilors sky-high self-appointed salaries are exposed across the internet for the world to see. The Top 5 Photos Banner on Your Wall…and How They Got There

Thumbnail image for The Top 5 Photos Banner on Your Wall…and How They Got There

When Facebook released it’s New Profile and Wall layout in March, we all got a brand new “feature” at the top of our Wall: the Top 5 Photos Banner (yes, it’s an awkward name but if you can come up with something catchier, I’m all ears). This 5-photo banner appears on both personal Pages as well as Facebook business Pages and is meant to be a “visual” opportunity to display who we are. This post looks at how these images get to this coveted position on your Wall, and some tips on managing these images. Let’s start with some examples.

Thumbnail image for How To Create a Custom Page Reveal for Facebook Fans

You’ve seen them everywhere on Facebook – those fancy “reveals” that when you “Like” a page and become a fan you get to see a special bit of content, maybe a coupon, special offer or other “fan-only” cool stuff. And now you want to know how to do this for your own Business Page (without having to buy a Fan Page Editor). This is what’s known as a “Reveal” – and is an opportunity for you as a business to “reward” your fans when they land on your business Page. If you’re not a fan you see a sign that [...]

The Ultimate Guide to Facebook Usernames

My name is...

A lot of people and businesses still don’t understand the importance of registering a username – or “vanity URL” as they are sometimes called – for themselves on Facebook. Facebook usernames are like domain names – which is the address that people use to find your website on the internet. Similarly, a username is the address that people use to find you on Facebook –  and you need to choose and register your username just as carefully as you did your website domain name (you did choose a domain name carefully, right?!) Let’s look at some Facebook username basics first.
