Facebook Timeline Finally Available To Everyone Worldwide

Thumbnail image for Facebook Timeline Finally Available To Everyone Worldwide

Facebook has announced an update on the Facebook blog today that the rollout of Timeline, its new profile page concept and layout, is now available wordwide. Timeline was originally introduced at the Facebook f8 conference on September 22, 2011, but was limited to only a few people and those who took the time to install the “developer” version (yes, for geeks like me who couldn’t wait). Timeline is, according to Facebook, “…a new kind of profile that lets you highlight the photos, posts and life events that help you tell your story”. It looks completely different from the “old” Facebook, which was [...]

Thumbnail image for Facebook Settles FTC Charges of Consumer Deception and Privacy Promises

Facebook, the most popular social network in the world with close to 800 million users, has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges against Facebook that it deceived consumers by telling them they could keep their information on Facebook private, and then repeatedly allowing that same information to be shared and made public. In a blog post on November 29th, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and Founder of Facebook made a  ”Commitment to the Facebook Community” that addresses the FTC settlement and outlines steps he’s taking to comply with the agreement. The FTC complaint against Facebook lists a number of instances in which Facebook [...]

My Personal Condolences to the Families of Steve Jobs:

Thumbnail image for My Personal Condolences to the Families of Steve Jobs:

Please allow me to extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the personal and professional families of Steve Jobs, a true visionary in every sense of the word. While I did not know him personally, his passion for design excellence in everything he did as well as his willingness to fail and continue believing in himself has inspired me to and countless other millions of others who live in that murky cross-section between art, design and technology. Steve made it cool to be nerdy and creative at the same time. Whether you’re a software geek, an industrial designer, an art [...]

Sneak Peek at Windows 8: Touch Screen for PCs

Thumbnail image for Sneak Peek at Windows 8: Touch Screen for PCs

Introduced just a few days ago by Julie Larson-Green, corporate vice president, Windows Experience, Windows 8 is a “reimagining of Windows, from the chip to the interface”, a new kind of operating system for a new generation of touch-centric hardware. The new Windows 8 interface is very visually driven. The Start screen now consists of a mosaic of tiles – each app show more information – each application is full screen, and works with touch as well as mouse and keyboard. Some of the new features include: Full-sized, customizable “Tile-based” Start screen, replacing the Windows “Start” menu Applications can be brought [...]

Non! to Facebook, Twitter: France Bans On-Air Mentions

Thumbnail image for Non! to Facebook, Twitter: France Bans On-Air Mentions

Leave it to the French to come up with another ban – this time it’s on-air mention of Facebook and Twitter. Ah, yes – the logic of banning the internet on television – somewhat ironic, to say the least. Here’s what one of the CSA – the French TV regulatory agency Conseil Supérieur de l’Audiovisuel -  regulators had to say: “Why give preference to Facebook, which is worth billions of dollars, when there are many other social networks that are struggling for recognition? This would be a distortion of competition. If we allow Facebook and Twitter to be cited on air, [...]

Editorial: The New Rules of Survival on the Social Internet

Survival On The Social Internet

A Massachusetts teacher, June Talvitie-Siple, gets fired from her job because of disparaging comments she wrote about the school community on Facebook. Domino’s Pizza executives are caught blind-sided because they didn’t realize that employees have created and posted a YouTube video that shows them messing with customer food orders. The video gets millions of views, the employees are arrested and the ensuing scandal is graphic, public and online. A small southern California town, the City of Bell, gains notoriety when its city administrators and city councilors sky-high self-appointed salaries are exposed across the internet for the world to see. What’s [...]

Yahoo Makes “Friends” with Facebook

As Amir Efrati wrote recently in the Wall Street Journal, social-networking giant Facebook grabbed a major share of on-line advertising marketing while Yahoo Inc. just stood by and watched. Finally, Yahoo has decided to use some of the most popular and effective of Facebook’s marketing tools – the “Like” and “Share” buttons. Yahoo has placed the buttons on their news and sports websites to give their contacts a chance to share articles with their contacts on Facebook. Yahoo, like other providers of content, is trying to leverage Facebook’s gigantic user base to draw traffic back to Yahoo after readers have [...]

Mary Meeker on Mobile Marketing

Mary Meeker, former Morgan Stanley analyst, spoke at a Google event recently about mobile marketing.  Meeker noted that so far it has been difficult for mobile publishers to create consistent ad-based revenue because of high costs to do so. On the other hand she states that mobile advertising is more efficient than in other types of media across measures like reach, engagement and targeting. Mary especially suggested smartphones can make TV interactive through video contents and ads. The biggest challenge is still on execution, though – mobile is still “new” technology. Want more information? Here’s a great post by Mark [...]
