Some Rules Are Meant To Be Broken…

Thumbnail image for Some Rules Are Meant To Be Broken…

[Updated 11/20/2011] My favorite game when I was 8 years old was Monopoly. I loved the idea of owning property, building a kingdom, the risks and rewards – and I loved the rules. Taking turns to move around the board, getting paid if someone landed on your property, 3 turns to get out of jail without doubles and without a Get Out of Jail card…lots of options, lots of possibilities. When you were a child, you naturally loved to play games. You learned the accepted pattern…and sometimes, you figured out what you could do to change the pattern and make it more interesting. Still [...]

How to Cross-Publish Posts from Twitter to Facebook

Thumbnail image for How to Cross-Publish Posts from Twitter to Facebook

One of the ways you can share content between your social networks is to allow your  accounts to connect or “sync” with each other. On Facebook, you can connect your Twitter account to your Facebook Page so that your “Tweets” automatically appear as Facebook Page posts on your Page Wall. You can also link your Twitter and Facebook accounts so that your Facebook posts appear as Tweets on Twitter. This means that you can share information with both your Twitter followers as well as your Facebook fans. How To Connect With Twitter There are several different ways you can connect Facebook with Twitter so [...]

Non! to Facebook, Twitter: France Bans On-Air Mentions

Thumbnail image for Non! to Facebook, Twitter: France Bans On-Air Mentions

Leave it to the French to come up with another ban – this time it’s on-air mention of Facebook and Twitter. Ah, yes – the logic of banning the internet on television – somewhat ironic, to say the least. Here’s what one of the CSA – the French TV regulatory agency Conseil Supérieur de l’Audiovisuel -  regulators had to say: “Why give preference to Facebook, which is worth billions of dollars, when there are many other social networks that are struggling for recognition? This would be a distortion of competition. If we allow Facebook and Twitter to be cited on air, [...]

Thumbnail image for Top 34 Social Media To-Do’s for Marketing Managers

While still very young, social media is beginning to mature in its meteoric rise to marketing stardom, and businesses have begun to recognize the importance of implementing an organized structure to managing their social media efforts. I’ve organized this list of social media marketing “To-Do’s” into five groups of what I would call the primary activities required for anyone who’s involved in executing social media campaigns and strategies for businesses: Listen, Monitor, Engage, Manage and Measure. You can use this list to organize your marketing activities and ensure that you’re executing against each area on a regular basis.

The Top 25 Reasons Businesses Fail at Social Media

Not Listening

Businesses are jumping onto Social Media in droves, but many aren’t succeeding and are completely mystified as to why their efforts aren’t bringing the results they expected. After all, they’ve been tweeting once a week for the last 3 months, so why don’t they have a thousand followers? And they put up a profile on Facebook, and posted directions to their store, so where are all the fans? And no, it’s not enough to simply setup an account and put a Twitter/Facebook/YouTube icon on your website, though it’s a start. The basics of social media marketing still seem to be [...]

What is a Hashtag? (aka that # symbol in Twitter)

It seems there’s much confusion over Twitter Hashtags for those who are new to Twitter, so I think it’s a good  time to write a blog to answer some of the most Frequently Asked Questions I’ve been asked on the topic: What is a Hashtag? A Hashtag is simply a word or collection of words that categorize a tweet, embedded as part of the tweet itself. Because a Hashtag is prefaced by a # symbol, the Hashtag becomes a clickable link by which a user can then find other tweets related to that category. The official definition of a Hashtag [...]

Realtors and Social Media: An Argument for Engagement

Many businesses are struggling to grapple with the concept of how social media can work for them in their business, not the least of which is the world of realtors and real estate. Many realtors still think of social media as that intangible, “virtual” place – the “world wide web”, an online place of bits and bytes where most interaction is with a computer or laptop or keyboard. It feels entirely at odds with the familiar, physical world of real estate, of homes and land, property and listings. But real estate isn’t just about the physical space that a person [...]

Your Basic B2B Plan for Using Twitter

by Jason Stewart The first thing people are told when figuring out how to best utilize social media to promote their business is to make a plan, and to set some basic expectations before jumping in with both feet. And that is where many of them stall out. Here is a basic primer/business plan for using Twitter, meant as a starting point but by no means the “final word” in using Twitter for your business.

Chasing a High Follower Count Will Never Make You Happy

Thumbnail image for Chasing a High Follower Count Will Never Make You Happy

I was in a meeting the other day with another social media professional and we were looking for case studies to feature in a panel discussion. My colleague brought up one specific brand again and again. She kept exclaiming over their high follower numbers. I found myself irritated with the emphasis. It got to the point where I couldn’t hide it anymore and my tone was sharp and she noticed. “I’m just not that impressed with numbers”, I said. Yeah, I don’t think that we’re going to be catching a beer together anytime soon. In a world where anyone can [...]

Twitter recently launched “Twitter Tales” –  a new way for people to tell their stories a couple of days ago consisting of articles that highlight creative individuals and businesses who are using Twitter in innovative and interesting ways.
